Canine V: Canine Sports Medicine

Course Description: This course will discuss the evaluation of sporting dogs for musculoskeletal conditions common to their events.  Common sports will be reviewed, with emphasis on biomechanical aspects that sporting dogs may encounter during competition.  Common sporting injuries of the forelimb, pelvic limb, and spinal column will be reviewed.  Anatomical areas of interest regarding sporting conditions will be performed, concentrating on the shoulder, elbow, hip, stifle, tarsus, and their muscles, tendons, and ligaments.  This course will also concentrate on new biologic treatments, including autologous conditioned plasma (platelet-rich plasma or PRP) and stem cell therapy, along with modalities used in sports medicine, such as heat and cold, therapeutic ultrasound, and therapeutic laser.  Joint injection techniques will also be discussed.  Finally, rehabilitation of common sporting injuries will be discussed, including tendon and ligament conditions, muscle conditions, and joint conditions.
